The name Alexz Johnson may sound familiar to you. At the age of just 27, Alexz has already made a place for herself in both the music and acting world. Her resume includes projects likes Instant Star, So Weird and Final Destination 3. Recently, she has been working hard on her music; writing, recording and touring. Her latest EP Heart was released today and is available on ITunes.

Currently on tour in Europe supporting Ron Rope and Wakey!Wakey!, we were able to snag Alexz for a couple questions about her EP Heart, her dream tour and what an American Dreamer means to her. See our interview below!

You released your latest single, “American Dreamer” last month. What was your inspiration for this song?
This song was inspired by my journey from Canada to NYC… It started with a dream of wanting to tour the world… play my songs live.It was the scariest time of my life moving there with no real plan but that. All we have is now so act upon our dream, which I think is so important to remember. I hope to inspire someone with American Dreamer.

How has your music evolved with your upcoming EP, Heart?
It’s hard to see from my own perspective.. I strive to always grow and become a stronger musician.. I think HEART represents my growth since heartache and the tortured early 20s..

Right now you seem to be focusing on your music. Is acting out of the picture for good?
I love acting.. it’s tough finding the great roles, to be honest. Music is my passion and it’s something I have more control over – more of a grasp on. I can steer my ship. That feels good. I’m always up for a great part though!

Who are some of your musical influences?
Rickie Lee Jones, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty… I like the classics.

How do you think you were able to avoid the “Disney Channel Curse”, unlike so many other young stars from the channel?
I was on a disney series for one season in 2001. It may just be the fact that I didn’t fall into the whole Disney branding, playing live shows with the Disney banner behind me. I always wrote music and I needed to spend time crafting that before starting to tour.

What made you decide to go through KickStarter for your last EP? This is an outlet a lot of artists seem to be using.
I used Pledge as my platform for the HEART EP and upcoming album. My previous crowd-funding effort with Kickstarter helped me raise 69k to launch my first tour.. it went well so I figured why not try it again! I think it’s a fantastic platform for independent artists.

If you could be on your dream tour, who would you want to play with?
Great question – hard to answer..
Coldplay
Kings Of Leon
Brandon Flowers

You’re currently on tour in Europe. What has been the most exciting place you’ve visited?
I’m in Stockholm right now! Hamburg was pretty cool… Dublin! They’ve all been amazing.. it’s hard to see much when you go from the bus to the venue. I can’t wait to come back and tour here again!

What are your plans for 2014?
Finish album, release album, tour, tour, tour.
