One year after the release of her debut album Voodoo, singer/songwriter Alexz Johnson is back! This time she’s joined forces with acclaimed music producer Demacio ‘Demo’ Castellon (Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Madonna), for Reloaded, a complete remix of 11 tracks from her 2010 album Voodoo. With anticipation building from fans and support from Demi Lovato and Nelly Furtado, “Alexz Johnson” has been trending worldwide on Twitter. Canadian Hairdresser chats with the Gemini Award winner about her thoughts on the new album.

The obvious question: How did Voodoo evolve into Reloaded?
The remixes really evolved naturally. It was more about standing back and allowing the process to move forward with Demo. It isn’t easy since I am so hands on with my music. Luckily, Demo is so talented and really put a lot of heart into remixing the songs.

How did you come to work with Demo for Reloaded?
He heard a few tracks and ended up coming to one of my shows at the NXNE Festival with his wife, Nelly Furtado. They both seemed to dig the sound and the next thing you knew we were in the studio figuring it all out!

Demo has worked with the likes of Madonna, Rihanna, Timbaland, and Justin Timberlake — just to name a few. How does it feel to work with such an accomplished producer?
It’s a real honour. He was so complimentary about my songwriting on the Voodoo album, and so genuine about wanting to remix it. It felt like things were in the right place at the right time.

“Look At Those Eyes” is a powerful ballad. What inspired this song?
It’s really a song about survival and making it through. There’s also a sense of spirituality to the song–knowing you’re not alone in your most trying times. I was swimming out of a tough time in my career, yet through the scariest moments, I felt hope. I wanted to share that hope with anyone I could.

Fans loved you as Jude Harrison on Instant Star, can we expect to see you on TV in the near future?
There’s always the hope! I recently filmed an episode of The Listener(CTV), which was really fun!

Who are you top five artists on your iPod right now?
Kings of Leon, Landon Pigg, Sara Bareilles, The Civil Wars and The Script.

How would you describe your personal style?
I love simplicity. I won’t pretend to be super knowledgeable of designers or trends but I know what I like. To me, you wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear you. I am always down with a classic tank-top and jeans.
