For many of us, hearing the name Alexz Johnson immediately brings to mind the television show Instant Star, along with a plethora of other acting gigs the multifaceted (and talented) artist has. On February 18th, Alexz will be releasing her brand new EP, HEART, adding yet another accomplishment to the list.

Despite being jet-lagged after landing in London, Alexz was kind enough to sit down and answer some questions about her new EP and her spectacular career.
Is there a concept or theme behind HEART?
There is a theme for sure. Heart is what I gave to these songs. My heart is what wrote these songs… a heart which is broken and mended is everything, is it not?

Do you mind walking me through the creative process?
It’s way to much to explain in an interview. I’ll try. It’s so emotional. It’s your world on paper being put into music by a producer. It’s devastating and honest. I don’t know how else to explain.

Is there a song on the EP that you favor most? If so, which one and why?
“Nothin’ On Me” and “Thank You For Breaking My Heart” because today, I choose those ones.

What are you most excited or nervous about in regards to releasing the EP?
Really, nothing. People can take it or leave it, but I’m proud of it.

Is there a reason that “American Dreamer” was the first single released?
Because it felt right. 🙂

How are you gearing up for tour?
Oregano oil, vitamin B and an eye pillow…

Where are you most excited to stop?
Berlin; it’s going to be amazing!

At such a young age, you had so much success in TV and in film. How is it to transition from one medium to another?
It’s been so much time between my last tv series and touring my own music, so that’s kind of hard to answer. I think that the transition has been very natural.

Do you think your early success has shaped you as an artist? As a person?
Probably in my writing…I wrote the majority of the music on my past TV projects, including my new project BLUE, which is coming out soon.

You’ve managed to do so much without a label. What is the hardest pat about not working with a label? What is the best part?
Independence. It’s both a pro and a con.

If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be and why?
Be less hard on yourself and others. Check out my blog on this very subject, it got some sweet story responses: alexzhasablog.com/2012/05/04/dear-19-year-old-me/
[E/N: Her blogpost is honestly very well-written and should probably be required reading for most people, especially those of high school age. Here are so quotes I LOVED:

“Enjoy your young years as much as you can because you’ll never get them back. They can seriously be the best years of your life.”

“Do the music you want to do, regardless of the struggle. Keep your eye on the ball. That time you think your heart is going to explode in pain….. it’s a good thing!! Trust it.. learn from it.”

Are there any huge changes you’ve noticed in the music industry that kind of plague you?
I see changes everyday, but what does it matter. It’s the music that counts. They’re all just trying to keep up.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully, I will be as happy as I am now.

Sorry to go back to this, but these are just general things I am morbidly curious about!
Back to what?? I dig this interview!

Did you go through similar phases in your life as your character on Instant Star did?
Definitely. I’d talk to the writers a ton…I think that they pulled from my life experience with signing with labels and recording in London, etc..

How much was your Instant Star persona based on you?
Probably more than I’d have liked it to be, but I was young.

What was it like to see yourself on TV or to see a fan fiction with yourself in it, if you saw these at all?
I could never watch myself. To this day.
