Fan Submission: Poop, Prom, and Porn
This is a great write-up by Chris Griffith and his experience at Alexz’s show in Atlanta, GA. I also expect this to be the first and last time those words are used as my post title 🙂
So last night I went to an Alexz Johnson concert in Atlanta! It was so awesome and I’m very happy she came back so soon after her last tour. And like her last show, some very cool and interesting things happened…
First of all, I was not supposed to go last night. The thing is that I’m 17 and got my driver’s license like a month ago, and my parents said I couldn’t go without someone else who could also drive. Unfortunately, the people I planned on going with canceled. So what was I supposed to do? Find a random stranger to go on a two-and-a-half hour drive with? Nah, I lied. I said one of my friends changed her mind and she was coming with. However, I do wonder if it’s more badass to lie or to be upfront about what I did. But because I don’t want to get in a lot of trouble, I think I’ll stick with my first choice.
Anyways, I got to the venue, saw Alexz by the merch booth with other band people, including Jay Stolar, and went over to talk to her. I was very happy to see that she remembered me from the last show in Atlanta! I gave her a mixed CD I made for her, and she definitely liked some of the artists I included on there. I also got her to make a video for my friend Katie who really wanted to be at the show but couldn’t. And then I asked Alexz to do something very special for me. I told her my senior prom was next month and that I still needed to ask my date. She agreed to let me film her asking my date for me! That was really awesome and I can definitely say Emily, my date, thought it was cool too (she said yes!). I then wished Alexz a great show and sat to down to wait for it to start.
After a few minutes, someone came and sat next to me. It was none other than Robby, Alexz’s #1 fan and owner of her fansite! Now me and Robby have a talked a bit since the last show in Atlanta. He really liked my post about that show and he asked me if I was coming back after the spring tour was announced. While waiting for Misty to play, we talked about all things Alexz: the last tour, this tour, what it’s like meeting Alexz, etc.
At 8 o’clock sharp, Misty came on to the stage. She played an awesome show that included my favorite song of hers, Hands Untied. Now what was really cool was what happened in between each song. Basically those times were filled with stories about pooping in yoga class, using her USB bracelets to watch porn, and being unable to hide queefs like farts. Oh yeah, very memorable indeed. But I’ve always said, the best way to judge a musician, besides the actual music, is how they act when they’re on stage. And Misty definitely proved she is an amazing human being.
Next on stage was Jay Stolar. He was the only performer who’s music I hadn’t listened to prior to the show. What a mistake that was. Not only did he have a great voice and emotional lyrics, but he had such an easygoing, nice personality that totally proved how cool he is. And I think everyone can agree the highlight from his show was when he came down to the audience and sang a song with us. It was especially personal for me because he talked of how it was about struggling to watch a family member or friend who has a disease. My grandfather was recently diagnosed with cancer, so I definitely related to that. I guess overall, I’d give Jay an A+. Now I just need to listen to more of his music.
And then Charlene Kaye performed. Now before anyone started playing, I had been wondering how many Charlene fans would be attending. I didn’t know what her fan base was like compared to Alexz’s and I was really curious about this other girl who was headlining the tour. But seeing her perform and listening to her voice just proved she was just as good as all the other performers. Songs like Animal Love and Woman Up had me dancing in my seat. By the way, is it weird that I love Woman Up so much? Eh, I guess guys have to woman up every once and a while too. But yeah her music proved that she’s a vibrant, exciting artist who reminds me of a modern day Cyndi Lauper. I should also note that her style and one of her heavier punk rock songs showed that she’s got a flare of Joan Jett to her as well. But yes Charlene played some true, authentic pop music that night, not over-produced crap with lyrics about sex and hoes other meaningless shit (coughnickiminajcough).
And finally Alexz performed! It was great to see and hear her again in the same place where I first met her. I was very happy to hear new songs like Nothing On Me and Don’t Stop. And I was even happier to hear her perform Look At Those Eyes, a song me and Katie were dying to hear at the last show. It felt like she was singing the song just for me, which makes sense because that’s the kind of song I’ve been needing right now. And another change that was really cool was Thief. The drums on that song completely gave it a different feel that, in my opinion, was a whole lot better the original. However, I still wish she had played Shout and Saving The Train. But I understand, because unlike last time, this show had four acts and not two. And overall, it was a great show and I’m really glad I went to it. Honestly I wish I could spend all my saturday nights like that.
After the show, the usual happened. Instead of waiting in the merch line, I talked with the performers. The only one I didn’t get to was Charlene, which really sucked because I thought she was amazing and wanted to tell her that in person! But thankfully I still got to see Jay and Misty. Jay was really nice, especially after telling him about my grandfather, and Misty even remembered me, or in her words, “you and that girl.” I also got to see Alexz again. I bought her live album and thanked her for the amazing show. I said goodbye to Robby and then I was off! Another two-and-a-half hour drive all my myself. But it was worth it 🙂
